The Dance of the Sun on the Bridge

Photograph © Thomas M. Ferraro 2012

Up before dawn
Predawn and we are moving about
Things dark and still
To the Railroad we go
Train already crowded
Subway South
to the tip of the island
Walk toward the bridge
Vendors and shops prepping for the day

Ascending the path to the tower
Walkway view blocked
Renovation stopping - Traffic starting
Joggers, bikers all commuting

No Sun yet
Colors emerging
Red – deep blue
Bridges silhouetted north of us

People moving
Who’s watching
Sky’s changing
Varying shades of Blue and Red

Red Dot peaks above closest Bridge
Sun emerges, bright red
It ascends to it’s early morning spot
Clouds and colors changing
Perhaps an hour goes by
We are treated to a grand show
Of color and beauty
By the moving sun and clouds
Who’s watching
People moving
Hustling to their own activities
Perhaps missing the Sun’s grand show

As we leave, others arrive
Taking pictures
Enjoying still
The Sun’s grand show is over till the eve.

To ponder
The Sun providing Light
Nuances of color and shape
The Bridge arching – connecting
Storms block the light
Cables and supports if cut - destroyed
Collapse – fragment
Violence temporarily eclipses beauty and connection

Do we allow light to shine
Beauty to radiate
Do we become one with the light
One with the radiance
Can our faith connect and
experience the majesty of the moment
Is it difficult to see what is spirit
What beauty hints at
Do we break our connection
Broken and isolated
Violence becomes the norm
Add to spirit, beauty and the divine
Subtract from spirit, beauty and the divine
It is a question of allowing
a question of choosing.
