"Fractious Federations: Why China and India's States Matter

On Thursday, September 13th,
I attended

The Fordham Gannon Lecture by

Dr. William J. Antholis,
Managing Director of the Brookings Institution
and
Senior Fellow, Governance Studeis Program at Brookings
Photographs are © Ralph M. Ferraro 2012

Dr. Antholis gave a very interesting picture of sections of China and India and their struggle to improve their economy.

He highlighted the issues between local jurisdiction and trying to set a federal system as a model for the entire country.

He touched on differences in cultural/religious issues and political orientation, i.e. communism v. democratic philosophies and implementations.

Despite potential difficulties, he presented the material in a way that stressed the potential to achieve great advances and improve the financial situation of the people in a country. He also gave some examples from the US federal v. state control.
