Photographing Fireworks


July 4th Fireworks

Photo tips for capturing fireworks. Try experimenting with the following suggestions. (Remember to check your display on back of camera to see how the settings are working for you)
1.     Make sure you are in a safe location

2.     Arrive early to choose a good spot to set up.
3.     Camera settings:
a.     Use low ISO setting (100, or possibly 200, 400 if very far from fireworks)
b.    Use camera in manual mode
c.     Aperture: Use f8 or smaller (f11 – f16),
                                               i.     Smaller than f16 might soften photo.
d.    Use Bulb setting for shutter speed (shutter will stay open as long as you hold exposure button (try to use a shutter release cable or wireless remote)
                                               i.     Open shutter when rocket is launched
                                             ii.     Close shutter when Color of fireworks starts to dim.
e.     Turn off autofocus & Use manual focus
                                               i.     Set focusing to infinity
4.     Tripod or handheld
a.     If you wish clear shots of the fireworks Use a tripod to keep camera steady.
b.    If you want an abstract of color in motion
                                               i.     Handhold camera
                                             ii.     Use the Bulb setting
1.     While shutter is open
a.     Try Moving camera in pattern
b.    Try Moving zoom in or out
5.     Most of all, enjoy the beauty of the color displays from the fireworks.  Have a great 4th of July weekend.
