"Expecting to find happiness from others, from outside oneself
is like looking in the mirror
and expecting the mirror to smile first."
Why do people turn to psychotherapy today?
Are they expecting the mirror to smile first.
Are. they seeking to identify with Freud's ego ideal,
the goal of being well thought of by others?
Are. they seeking a label from the diagnostic manual?
An external intellectual label to explain why they are not happy; why they are not functional as society says they should be?Do they think that a compliment or approval from someone indicates that they are worthy, or successful?
Perhaps they have been disconnected from their self to an external formulation of an ego?
Ego by definition is a fractured medical model to try and simplify who a person is.
Ego is an attempt to codify a person or event by an outdated notion of psychology (Newtonian physics). A person might want to feel secure ... give me the measurable data ...
the data that can be seen without question. Let me break the personality into clinical parts.
Perhaps understanding the fragmented parts will enable the mirror to smile first?
Quantum psychology has transformed data into something beyond physical, beyond measurement in the traditional sense. The wise people of our ancestors, the. mystics, the story tellers, knew that visualization, mindfulness, Breath are far more revealing. They saw our thing kin as a use of energy. They saw our feeling as a use of energy. They knew that thinking and feeling are part of our essence; and are the creative energies that can enable us to be who we are, and achieve our happiness. Thinking and feeling are connected to spirit. Spirit is connected to a greater reality, to nature, to the Creative Source.
The ancient Greeks saw psychotherapy differently from Freud, and the western tradition. For the Greeks, psyche referred to spirit. Therapy referred to healing.
The mirror not smiling first could shake our comfort zone. If the mirror doesn't smile first whose lead do we follow? How can we know that we have value?
"We all have our. own unique energery signature, buy
unless we are willing to take the inner journey, the path is blocked, and
we stray further from alignment with who we. truly are." [Sifu Mattthew Cohen]
So how do we unlock the mirror and get the mirror to smile?
First we need to find the right mirror. There are three kinds of micro. The bathroom mirror, is used to check to see if our head is still attached to our body ... if our hair the way we want it ... have we applied makeup or shaved?
The second mirror is the funny house mirror. The funny house mirror shows us all kinds of distortions. The distortions could come from the people who are the models in our life but have not used or had the opportunity to discover the third mirror.
The distortions come from various elements in society, in our culture, in religious practices that tell us who we should be. These elements seek control to tell us who we are and how we should behave.
The Third mirror is the Psychic mirror. It enables us to look inside of ourselves. It invites us to take our inner journey of discovery. it invites us to use the tools of breath, the quiet and being receptive. Receptive to our inner voices. In the quiet, two voices will come to us. The first voice is of our own essence, our soul, our inner being. The second voice is the Creative Source of the Universe. These voices only can be heard when we chose to make the inner journey and listen for the voices within the quiet. As we hear and accept the wisdom of the voices, the mirror composes an accurate reflection of the Self.
